The hidden thyroid issue that made me gain 40lbs – why “normal” TSH means nothing

Last year I stepped on the scale after 6 months of eating 1500 calories and walking 10k steps a day. I’d gained 3 more pounds. That was on top of 40 lbs in 2 years.

By Scarlette Schneider

I told doctors about my fatigue, hair loss, brain fog, and constant cold. Every time they ran only one test.. THS

Mine was 2.8. “Perfectly normal,” they said. Suggestions they had ranged from eating “less processed food” (I cook everything from scratch) to therapy for “emotional eating” (I log every bite). One even implied I was lying. This broke me because I lost trust in my medical providers who are so called professionals.

With a family history of hypothyroidism, I knew something was wrong. So I tracked symptoms, temps, energy crashes, blood sugar spikes. I learned that “normal” ranges are misleading and TSH alone misses tons of thyroid issues.

What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You About "Normal" THS Levels

TSH isn’t actually measuring how your thyroid is working. It’s just measuring the signal being sent to it.

So when that number comes back “normal,” it doesn’t tell you what’s happening after that. It doesn’t show whether your body is actually producing the right hormones… or converting them into the form your body can use. And it definitely doesn’t show if something deeper is off underneath.

That’s the part that drove me crazy. Because on paper, everything looked fine. But in real life, nothing felt fine. I was exhausted all the time. My hair was thinning. I couldn’t think straight. I was cold constantly. And the weight just kept going up no matter what I did.

And every time I brought it up, it came back to “Your TSH is normal.” But that one number doesn’t explain any of that.

It doesn’t explain why your body feels like it’s slowing down. It doesn’t explain why you can be doing everything “right” and still feel worse. And it definitely doesn’t explain why nothing changes.

I Finally Pushed For More Than A THS Test

I finally convinced a doctor to run a full panel. TSH was 2.9. But Free T3 was bottomed out, Reverse T3 was high → classic Low T3 Syndrome. My body had plenty of T4 (inactive hormone) but wasn’t converting it to T3 (the active one). Full gas tank, broken fuel pump.

Patterns emerged: conversion tanked when inflammation spiked, when ferritin was low, when insulin resistance flared. It wasn’t just about meds – it was calming inflammation, balancing iron, managing blood sugar, adding nutrients like selenium and zinc.

But knowing what was wrong didn’t automatically fix it. Because now I had a new problem — how do you actually support all of that? It wasn’t just one thing. It was inflammation. Nutrients. Hormone conversion. Everything had to work together. And I had no idea where to even start.

The Simple Solution That Helped Me Take Care Of Everything At Once

Most of what I was finding only focused on one piece — either thyroid, or energy, or stress — but nothing that looked at how all of it works together. That’s what made this different. It wasn’t trying to “fix” my thyroid.

It was focused on supporting the things my body actually needed to function properly — the nutrients, the balance, and everything involved in how those hormones are produced and used.

Which made sense, because at that point it was obvious my body wasn’t getting or using what it needed properly.

So I decided to try it and just see what happened.

8 months later: down 22 lbs without changing diet or exercise. Clear head. Energy back. Hair regrowing.

For the first time in years, it actually felt like my body was working with me instead of against me. I felt like I was in the driver seat again.

And the biggest difference wasn’t anything extreme. It was finally supporting the things my body had clearly been missing the whole time.

Why This Worked When Everything Else Failed Me

What finally made the difference was actually addressing the conversion itself.

The process of turning T4 into T3 depends on specific nutrients — especially selenium and zinc. Without those, your body literally can’t carry out that step efficiently, no matter what your labs say.

That’s exactly what this formula focuses on.

It provides those key nutrients in one place — selenium and zinc for conversion, iodine for actually producing the hormones, and the vitamins that support how your body uses them once they’re there.

So instead of everything stalling out at that conversion step, it finally had what it needed to keep that process moving.

I started taking this supplement as my doctors weren't (and still aren't) listening to me when I tell them there is still something not right with my body. The hair loss, lack of energy, massive weight gain (80lbs) when I start working out to lose weight, constantly being cold to point of shivering even in the summer heat, all kinds of that just scream thyroid issues and my doctors just look at my slightly low results and tell me to stop drinking a soda a day and stop eating carbs.
Even an MRI showing a partially empty sella and I was told it was really nothing to worry about as it doesn't affect anything. My endocrinologist finally grudgingly put me on some meds to help lose weight as just the act of breathing and I was gaining weight. I did lose 30lbs and then plateaued so she added another med instead of addressing any of underlying problems....just another bandaid. While I want to lose the weight, I much rather fix the reason I gain the weight when trying to lose it thru normal means (I gained mine just walking on a treadmill in the winter). Just a week after starting the thyroid support and I have way more energy when I used to have to force myself out of bed, my skin is starting to look better even in the middle of what is our cruddy winter weather winter, and the best part is my 3 teenagers have noticed my boost in energy and are overjoyed for me able to join family activities again.

I wish I had known about this supplement a long time ago. I’m 54 and have had an under active thyroid for more than a decade. It seemed that no matter how much sleep I got, I was always exhausted and it got worse when I started keeping my 15 month old granddaughter. I would sleep the entire weekend, getting up only to eat and go to the bathroom. I really could not function. I couldn’t even think. It felt like I was on the verge of a breakdown. I’m a veteran with PTSD, so my anxiety was through the roof, also. The VA refused to believe my thyroid was out of whack. I didn’t think it was possible that a supplement could help me. Boy was I wrong. I took my first dose Sunday, expecting nothing. Well, about 45 minutes after I had taken it, I felt myself smiling. It had been many months since I had experienced a smile just because. And I wondered why I was feeling so good. And then I remembered taking the pill. My mouth practically fell to the floor. I woke up before 4 a.m. Sunday. Y’all, I didn’t stop doing things until after 8 that night. And I still wasn’t tired when I stopped. I haven’t experienced that kind of energy since I was in my early 40s. It just kind of happened. No crazy racing heart. No extreme burst of energy making me get up and do. It was a steady, constant, peaceful energy that lasted all day long!

I have always had trouble with my weight and puffyness of face and body. I always thought it was just diet and exercise that I needed to control all of this, but nope. I was on a 800 calorie diet (focusing only fruits and vegetables, no meat and very little carbs) and exercised 6 hrs a day just to be at a normal weight... needless to say I was always tired and hated life. I knew something was wrong, so went to clinics to see if they could help. They weren't much help either, suggesting extreme diets and exercise programs. I took full control of my health because the United States health system is a joke! A deadly joke. I went ahead and did research. I looked up "Thyroid issues," because that is something my family had a long history of having. I came to a few information on hypothyroidism and that is when I found out that was what I have. I started to find supplements that would help and came across these. I saw the reviews and noticed that I wasn't alone on this matter. For $30 a bottle this is far cheaper than doing surgery and being on pharmaceuticals. After a week taking these, I notice that I am more self aware of my surroundings and better equip to defending myself and those around me (have a few abusive family members so I am ready to fend them off). As for weight, I notice that I have an hourglass figure. Hypothyroidism was destroying my body and making me think I was a rectangular figure. The only way I could be like this was being on an extreme 500 calorie diet and exercising nonstop for 6-7 hours straight. Goes to show that hypothyroidism is no joke. These pills are a great assistance. I don't have to be dieting and exercising like a maniac anymore. I eat normally and just yoga 30 minutes a day. I lost 5 pounds naturally after two weeks taking these.

Get Back In The Drivers Seat Of Life

For so long, it felt like no matter what I did, my body just wasn’t responding.

The weight, the fatigue, the brain fog — it all felt out of my control.

But once I actually started supporting what my body needed, everything changed.

It wasn’t about doing more. It was about finally doing the right thing.

If you’re stuck feeling the same way — like you’re doing everything right but nothing is working — it might not be you.

It might be what your body has been missing this whole time.
